IPTV not working with VPN

We’ve recently had multiple reports within the TROYPOINT Insider that Surfshark VPN United States servers aren’t working with various IPTV services.  Users indicate that they can successfully use their IPTV service only if they connect through a VPN server from outside the United States.

When I heard about this issue, I reached out to my contact at Surfshark VPN asking if they block any IPTV services and this was her reply.

Surfshark does not block IPTV services.

This makes sense as if any VPN service did this, it would probably be the end of their business.  Now that I knew that IPTV wasn’t being blocked by this VPN service it was time to investigate.

IPTV Not Working with VPN

I reached out to multiple TROYPOINT Patrons who commented about IPTV not working with VPN and asked, “What IPTV service are you using?”  Every single reply back pointed to Kemo IPTV as the common denominator.  Not all of them indicated that they used the official Kemo service, but they were using resellers of the same service.  One popular reseller that kept coming up in these conversations was ITTechBasics IPTV.  There are others out there as well such as Lemo and Kemo Sat.

There are probably hundreds of Kemo IPTV resellers operating on the Internet as this is one of the most popular “white label IPTV services” out there.

An IPTV reseller is an individual or business that resells the same exact service but through a different name.  There are literally thousands of IPTV services now in business and I would venture to guess that 99% of them are resellers of some service.

We’ve had some TROYPOINT Insiders report that they have asked their IPTV service if they were blocking VPN and their reply back was, “No.”  Keep in mind that these resellers have no clue what’s happening on the actual servers where the real service resides.

So, for some reason, Kemo IPTV and its resellers are blocking Surfshark VPN servers within the United States.

Why Do IPTV Services Block VPNs?

One reason why these services block VPNs is because they don’t want customers sharing accounts.  They can easily lock down their service to an individual IP address to prevent sharing.  This means more money for the IPTV service.  We watched the same issue play out with Netflix.

Another reason is that they may be an affiliate of a specific VPN and they block all others to ensure that they make more commissions.  They can take the stance, “Surfshark doesn’t work with our service but XYZ VPN does and here’s a link to buy it.”

One TROYPOINT Insider commented that his provider was blocking irritating customers from their service and in doing so was negatively impacting other customers using the same VPN.

Trust me everyone, the blame goes to your IPTV service. I had same problem and I put int a support ticket and indicated my Surfshark IP address that I was connecting through. After multiple back and forths they fixed the problem. Here’s what was happening. They would have a$$hole customers who they would ban but the problem was that some of these people were connecting through a VPN and in my case, the same IP address I was using got banned. They said that they can usually identify if an IP address is a VPN and they won’t ban those but who knows with some of these service. Keep pressing on your provider until they fix it and if they don’t, move onto a different IPTV service. There sure as heck isn’t a shortage of providers out there.

You may wonder how these IPTV services and others can block VPNs but it’s quite simple.  You can easily find databases on the Internet that list the IP addresses of popular VPN services.  Once these IP addresses are obtained, the service simply blocks all traffic with a rule that they add to their server.

Dedicated VPN IP Address

One way to get around any VPN IP Address block is by purchasing a dedicated IP from your VPN if they offer it.

When I was going through this research I decided to do this through my Surfshark VPN account.  Unfortunately, this feature isn’t supported on Fire TV and Android TV yet so I set it up on my Asus Router.  After doing this, I fired up my Kemo IPTV service and it worked perfectly with my dedicated IP address.  Since I’m the only person using this address, it’s not in the databases so they can’t block it.

Not only was I able to use IPTV with a VPN from a United States server, I am also now able to use my bank website as well.  Plus, I no longer get the annoying captchas when doing web searches.

According to Surfshark they will be releasing the Dedicated IP feature for Fire TV and Android TV later this year.  For now, it works on their computer and phone apps in addition to router setup as I mentioned.

Solutions for IPTV Not Working with VPNs

  1.  Find a new IPTV Service that doesn’t block your VPN.
  2. In the case of this Kemo issue, users can connect through a server outside the United States or through a Static IP that I show in video above.
  3. Get a dedicated IP Address from Surfshark VPN and be happy as nothing is blocked.

Some may say that another solution is to find a VPN service that doesn’t block their IPTV provider.  Keep in mind that these VPN blocks by IPTV services can happen at any time.  In reading through the topics regarding this on our Insider, Kemo was working perfectly fine with Surfshark VPN United States servers a few months ago.
